Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is a Dual Language program?

A. Dual Language is a type of foreign language instruction in which the usual daily activities are conducted in Spanish, and English when necessary.  Students acquire the necessary language skills to understand and communicate in Spanish, while activities are scaffolded in English. This type of program is seen as a highly effective way to learn a second language.

Q.  How do you teach Spanish to the children?

A. We don’t “teach” Spanish to the children.  Language is not the content of instruction, but the vehicle for it. We have a curriculum with themes and topics like any other school, but we do everything in Spanish.  Our books are in Spanish, we do circle time in Spanish, and we sing in Spanish.

Q. How large are the classes?

A. In the Fall, 2019, we will offer classes 5 days/week, for ages 3-5.  We will have a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 students in each class.

Q.  Will the teacher speak in Spanish the whole time?

A. Our teachers make every effort to speak Spanish 100% of the time.  However, we would NEVER let a child feel lost because of a language barrier!  We want the children to feel comfortable in their environment and to be encouraged to love their new language.  When a new student joins, commands are given first in Spanish and then in English, as necessary.  For those children who already have some knowledge or are fluent in Spanish, our iSpeak teachers will make sure to challenge them.

Q.  Why is it important for my child to learn Spanish?

A.  All of the benefits aside, we live in a country where the Spanish-speaking population is growing rapidly.  Preschool-age children will NEED to be able to speak Spanish in order to be competitive in the future job market.  By the time your child graduates from college, being able to speak Spanish will be as commonplace as computer literacy.  And the best time to learn is while they are young!
